Orthopedics

Your bones, joints, and muscles work hard to keep you moving each day. Take care of them with high-quality orthopedic services at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, part of Montage Health. You’ll have access to experienced specialists, so you can enjoy more physical activity and freedom of movement.

Diagnosing your condition

Your care likely will start with a physical exam, during which your doctor will ask about your symptoms and may explore your range of motion and flexibility. If the doctor orders an imaging test, you’ll benefit from our advanced technology, which delivers clear, accurate results.

If you break a bone, your care plan may include a bone scan to check for loss of bone density, or osteoporosis.

Conditions we treat

Rely on knowledgeable members of Community Hospital’s medical staff and Rehabilitation Services team to care for musculoskeletal injuries and conditions such as:

  • Arthritis and bursitis
  • Back and neck pain
  • Broken bones (fractures)
  • Elbow injuries, including tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
  • Foot and ankle pain caused by problems like Achilles tendinitis and plantar fasciitis
  • Hip pain
  • Knee injuries, including anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears and meniscus tears
  • Shoulder injuries, such as rotator cuff tears
  • Sprains and strains
  • Wrist pain, including carpal tunnel syndrome

If you have a foot or ankle condition, you may also benefit from seeing a podiatry specialist.

Conservative treatments

To help you get back to your normal activities as soon as possible, your treatment may start with conservative, nonsurgical measures. Your doctor may recommend:

  • Braces, casts, or splints to hold an injured bone or joint in place while it heals
  • Pain management – Uses techniques such as injections of steroids (pain relievers) or hyaluronic acid (joint lubricant) to relieve aches
  • Rehabilitation – Includes physical therapy and occupational therapy to help you safely improve strength, range of motion, and ability to do daily tasks
  • Self-care measures, such as rest, heat and cold therapy, lifestyle changes, and more

After an injury, count on your doctor to offer tips and education on preventing future problems and staying safe during exercise, sports, or physical activity at home or work.

Orthopedic surgery

If you and your doctor decide surgery is your best treatment option, choose Community Hospital for complete surgical care. Achieve your best health outcome through procedures such as:

  • Achilles tendon repair
  • Fracture repair
  • Rotator cuff repair
  • Shoulder, elbow, and hand surgery
  • Spine surgery for neck and lower back pain
  • Torn ACL or torn meniscus repair

Top care for joint replacement

If conservative treatments haven’t eased your hip, knee, or shoulder arthritis pain, joint replacement may offer long-lasting relief. This procedure exchanges a damaged joint with an artificial one that feels natural. You can trust Community Hospital for the best possible results because:

  • We’re recognized as a Blue Distinction® Center from Blue Cross Blue Shield for top-quality knee and hip replacement
  • We perform more joint replacement surgeries than any other area hospital

Arthroscopic (less invasive) options

Ask your surgeon if your procedure will use arthroscopy — a minimally invasive approach. Instead of making a large incision to perform surgery, your surgeon makes one or more tiny incisions and slides in a miniature camera to guide the surgical tools. Minimally invasive means you’ll have less pain and a quicker recovery.

Same-day and overnight care

You may be able to go home the same day as your procedure, especially if your surgery is arthroscopic. But if you need to remain in the hospital overnight for surgical care, learn what to expect during your stay, including private rooms with views of nature and other amenities that help you feel comfortable while you recover.

Collaborative care centered on you

Your surgeon, nurses, and other healthcare providers will work closely together to give you excellent care during a hospital stay. A nurse navigator or the coordinator of our Orthopedic Center works closely with you for:

  • Hip replacement
  • Knee replacement
  • Shoulder replacement

These professionals help make sure you get all the services you need to reach your best outcome. Look forward to a phone call offering support and answering any of your recovery-related questions after you go home.
